Break Out The Grill!

As spring come in this year more like summer, the smell of grilled food begins to fill the evenings.  After sitting cold all winter long (for most!), our grills are one of the best methods of cooking we have when the weather takes a warm turn.  But often overlooked is the fact that our grills have likely SAT ALL WINTER!  So, here are some safety tips for starting your grill season off on the right foot:

- Propane grills:  check all connections, tanks, and hoses for leaks.  This can be done by applying a light soap & water mix to any connections or hoses.  If gas is escaping, bubbles of soap will form.  You can also smell if the gas is escaping.  In either case, do not use the grill if you suspect leakage and have the grill serviced before use.

- Charcoal grills:  use only approved charcoal lighter fluid to light charcoal grills.  Using anything else can result in SEVERE hazard, injury, or death (see http://www.inforum.com/event/article/id/275254/).  Do not add lighter fluid (or any other flammables) to the grill once it is burning.  Be sure the coals are completely out when you are done cooking.

- All grills:  most grills are designed for outdoor use only.  Do not use them in garages, homes, or even over hangs as the flare-ups can ignite anything above them.  Keep your grill away from any structure.  Many times you'll see disformed or melted vinyl siding from using a grill too close to the home!  Keep your grill clean of grease; most of them have a grease pan/trap that you can remove and clean.  Make sure children and pets are out of the way when grilling.  Finally, NEVER leave an operating grill unattended.

These tips should help make your summer a success!
