Garage Build - Day 4

After a weekend of no activity, the garage is project is back up and running!  Our last post was basically about the concrete slab and some of the items required to help keep it together.  The next step was setting a course of 8" block around the perimeter of the slab.  This was to keep the framing well above possible moisture and snow that tends to be present in or around a garage.  As the blocks were core filled with concrete, "L" bolts were inserted to hold down the pressure treated lumber plates and sill plates.  Also, a layer of "sill seal" was placed between the block and green lumber, shown below.

Next, the sill plates and top plates were laid out for studding, window and door framing.  This allows for correct placement of the framing members.

The sill plates had previously been drilled to fit over the anchor bolts on the block.  The framing members were connected and the walls lifted up and onto the bolts.  An item to keep in mind:  lumber is not easy to lift!  Make sure you have plenty of help when setting your walls!

Once the walls are up and supported, extra bracing is crucial to keeping them up and plumb.  Be sure to have your level handy for this part, because plumb and level walls make the rest of the process a lot simpler!

The back wall was also set and aided in tying all three walls together for the night.  The garage door wall wasn't finished as of yet but always seems to be a challenge due to the size of the header required for the door.  As you can see, progress is moving right ahead!
